Reno Plastic Surgeon Responds To Most Recent ASAPS Statistics

Dr. McCormack discusses why she believes the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics for cosmetic procedures match those of her Nevada private practice.

Reno, NV – Dr. Tiffany McCormack, a Reno cosmetic surgeon, views plastic surgery as customized treatment plans for each individual patient. Though she understands that her patients have their own unique goals, she also notices treatment trends that emerge among her clients. In looking at the most recent American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) statistics, Dr. McCormack responds to how this data matches her experience at McCormack Plastic Surgery, her own private practice.

According to ASAPS, the 2012 top three surgical procedures in order of popularity are:

1. Breast Augmentation
2. Liposuction
3. Tummy Tuck

Dr. McCormack says these procedures align exactly with the statistics of her own practice. She also notes that many of her patients opt to have the three procedures performed in combination during a mommy makeover. In regard to why she feels these procedures are the most popular among her patients, the Reno plastic surgeon says:

“Breast augmentations have come a long way, in my opinion. Many women are seeking to increase fullness while maintaining a natural look. Once the FDA lifted the moratorium on silicone gel implants after studies proved their safety, women began to feel more confident using them. In my opinion, they offer a more natural look and feel than saline implants do. Breast implants also cover a wide age range of women. There are younger women who never quite developed as much as they hoped, as well as women who lost a significant amount of volume with pregnancy, age, or weight fluctuations.”

Dr. McCormack goes on to add that with the advent of alternatives to traditional liposuction, more patients are choosing less invasive techniques – such as CoolSculpting® – which has led to an increase in volume. Some of these newer techniques involve concurrent laser skin tightening while others offer less invasive techniques for smaller areas that do not require general anesthesia or treatment in a surgery center. Additionally, she says tummy tuck surgeries remain as popular as ever as a means for removing excess, lax skin and fat as well as repairing the anterior muscles to the abdominal wall that are often stretched apart during pregnancy.

Concerning age ranges for plastic surgery, Dr. McCormack believes there are a number of contributing factors as to why, according to ASAPS and her own experiences, patients between the ages 35-50 are most likely to receive cosmetic enhancement procedures: “Many women wait until after they are finished having children before electing for cosmetic rejuvenation. Also, because insurance does not typically cover elective procedures, financial restrictions often play a role in the average age of patients. In addition, I believe that after a certain number of years, people become more comfortable with who they are and more confident undergoing a surgical procedure to alter something that has bothered them their whole lives.”

As plastic surgery is discussed more and more openly, Dr. McCormack says she has seen the largest increase in male patients over the last year. She notes that these men most often seek liposuction, facelifts, rhinoplasty, or laser hair removal, which she attributes to the fact that plastic surgery has become less taboo in modern culture.

Looking to the future, the Reno plastic surgeon says she believes breast augmentation will once again reign supreme by year’s end in terms of popularity at her practice, citing the wide age range of women that can benefit from the procedure.
